The book gives us various insights to the Native American culture. In my opinion the biggest insight was the dynamics of their so-called government, at least relating to the Powhatan. In the Powhatan tribe, the leader was Powhatan who ruled over many smaller tribes and essentially united them under himself. He did this mostly by force and essentially beat the smaller tribes into submission, but by joining them they had to every so often give Powhatan an offering in return he would protect them. He also ruled over these smaller tribes by having lots of children with the women from the different tribes and his children would be made to watch over them and of course their loyalty was ultimately to their father. I know some of the English and John Smith in particular came with the expectation that the Native American women would throw themselves at the English men and they would be smothered by sexual advances by these women. Jamestown colony was poorly prepared to succeed by not exactly having a solid and sustainable source of food for them.
