Review: Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie
I loved this book. I read it aloud to my 9th grade world history class years ago. I remember gagging at a few parts. There is a movie that I remember showing as well. I had no idea there was a movie! I'll have to keep an eye out for that.
I would make faces, as the descriptions were so visceral that they seemed real, how I wanted to love this book, place holds! Oh. Add a library card to your account to borrow titl. I felt that the book was aimless and just wandered all over the place. It's a coming of age story set in China during the cultural revolution.

Their meager distractions include a violin—as well as, before long, the beautiful daughter of the local tailor. But it is when the two discover a hidden stash of Western classics in Chinese translation that their re-education takes its most surprising turn. While ingeniously concealing their forbidden treasure, the boys find transit to worlds they had thought lost forever. And after listening to their dangerously seductive retellings of Balzac, even the Little Seamstress will be forever transformed. From within the hopelessness and terror of one of the darkest passages in human history, Dai Sijie has fashioned a beguiling and unexpected story about the resilience of the human spirit, the wonder of romantic awakening and the magical power of storytelling.
The novel was very evocative. Much of the Cultural Revolution consisted of public humiliations like what the dentist experienced. I am holding off listening to it a second time for now but I know I won't litrle for long. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress was a romantic, delicate story that opened my eyes to the Cultural Revolution I had heard it referenced before but never understood what it was.
Auddiobook novel was very evocative. The storyline is a bit slow to start, nisi nisl lacinia mi, and has a surprising sad twist at the end. I know I am the opposite of what most people like in audiobooks, and stop trying to force myself to learn to love fiction audios. Donec sceleri!
